Ask Amber: Why Do I Have Difficulty Expressing Emotions?

Question

I’ve always struggled with expressing and even feeling emotions. It’s like there’s a wall between me and the rest of the world, and I don’t know how to fix it. I’m naturally introverted, so connecting with others has never been easy, but this inability to open up emotionally makes it nearly impossible.

When I feel a negative emotion, I shut down completely, I turn cold, can’t find the words to explain myself, and push people away. Friends and colleagues have called me rude or unlikable behind my back, even though I never mean to come across that way. Worse, people often think I’m upset when I’m not and ask me if I’m okay when I am perfectly fine.

I know my struggles are holding me back from making deeper connections and maintaining relationships, but I don’t know how to fix that. I have come to accept that this is just me and not many people understand me but at the same time that sucks. Do you have any advice?
