Three Icy Cocktails for a Hot Christmas Day

If there’s one thing Christmas Day in Australia calls for, it’s an ice-cold drink in hand. When the sun is relentless, the BBQ is firing and those family conversations start circling, a refreshing cocktail can be the ultimate saving grace. From frozen favourites to fruity crowd-pleasers, these three icy cocktails are designed to keep you cool, hydrated (emotionally, at least) and firmly in festive spirits all day long. Cheers to sipping your way through a hot Christmas, one delicious drink at a time.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a chilled, citrussy drink that is a must have on a blistering Christmas day. Think of it like a lemonade with that gentle hit of alcohol we all need to get through those conversations we don’t want to have on Christmas Day. “No grandma, we still haven’t changed our minds on having kids.”

Ingredients:

  • 30ml of Vodka
  • 30ml of Blue curaçao
  • 120mls of lemonade
  • Garnish: your choice of a lemon wheel or maraschino cherry

Recipe:

This recipe is short, simple and quick to pull off!

  1. Add the vodka, Blue curaçao and lemonade into a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake well until the drink is cold and chilled.
  3. Strain into a glass of your choice, pouring it over crushed ice.
  4. For the final step, add a garnish of your choice to complete the drink!

Watermelon Gin Smash

A symphony of tastes awaits you on your first sip of a Watermelon Gin Smash. I’m dubbing it the drink of this summer and you need to sink your teeth into it ASAP! Bring this out on Christmas day and let the summer vibes kick in. Not only is it refreshing, it’s iconic and will bring life to your Christmas day celebrations.

Ingredients:

  • 1kg of seedless watermelon, chopped
  • 250g of strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 3 cups of crushed ice
  • 1 and ⅓ cups of Bombay Sapphire gin
  • Small watermelon wedges, to garnish

Recipe:

If you’re ready to put your mixology degree to the test then this is the drink for you. A slightly longer prep time, but worth the wait.

  1. Place watermelon into a blender. Pulse until crushed.
  2. Layer strawberries, ice and watermelon into 4 glasses.
  3. Pour the Bombay Sapphire gin into each glass.
  4. Finish by adding your garnish watermelon wedge to the edge of your glass.
  5. Serve I-M-M-E-D-I-A-T-E-L-Y!

Frosé

Pronounced Fro-zay, this New York City drink is your ideal drink of choice this Christmas day. Fruity, refreshing and surprisingly crisp – it ticks all our boxes for a hot day drink. Its frozen qualities will send a chill down your spine. The kind you normally get when you’re getting the ick. Replace that bad vibe with a smooth, summery glass of your soon to be favourite drink.

Ingredients:

  • 900ml of Rosé
  • 30ml of Vodka
  • 15ml of sugar syrup
  • 3 strawberries, bring extra for garnish

Recipe:

Short and sweet aren’t just words used to describe you. It’s also an accurate representation of what to expect when you’re making this drink.

  1. Add all the ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend until the strawberries are completely pureed.
  3. Add 3 cups of ice, then blend on high until the mix reaches a smooth consistency.
  4. Pour into a chilled glass then serve with a strawberry garnish.
