Top 5 Creative Cafes & Restaurants in Melbourne

Melbourne is synonymous with creativity. From fashion, art, music and food, there’s always a deeper story to what meets the eye. As winter descends on the city and as the blues settle in for some of us, The Modern Muse Magazine has rounded up a selection of creative cafes & restaurants to put on your radar that infuse a unique artistry into their interiors and their food.

Kumo Desserts

For our CBD aficionados, head over to Kumo Desserts on Little Lonsdale Street for a souffle – or a pancake… or both! Kumo Desserts give you the classic timelessness of a pancake, coupled with a light, fluffy texture of a souffle. It quite literally takes a traditional pancake to soaring new heights, with flavours ranging from buttery Biscoff to warm honey and refreshing strawberry.

Monopoly Dreams Cafe

Revisit your millennial and Gen Z childhood in the Monopoly Dreams Café, conveniently located right next to the Monopoly retail store in Melbourne Central. Go down the memory lane amidst the game-inspired interiors for a little dopamine hit during the city’s (rather dismal!) winter. Enjoy classic American burgers and spritz drinks for the whole family, or just your friends. The best part? Bookings are not required!

Johnny, Vince & Sam’s Ristorante

Owned and founded by Melbourne’s beloved comedy trio, Sooshimango, this gem on Lygon Street cannot be missed. The lace curtains, spiral telephone, vintage Italian paintings and box TV instantly create a feeling akin to Nonna’s house. Rooted in old European family charm where leftovers after every dinner party were a ritual, and the special ‘guest-only’ plates were enshrined in ornate wooden cabinets (despite being hardly used), the delectable pastas, pizzas and arancini feel like a warm hug. Having recently expanded to the top floor, Johnny, Vince & Sam’s Ristorante is slowly becoming a cult Melbourne favourite.

Panda Hot Pot

Who doesn’t crave a steaming pot of noodles on a chilly night? If that has perked your interest, transport yourself to Ancient China at Panda Hot Pot. Dine in a martial-arts themed interior, framed by ornate gold and wooden staircases, glowing lanterns and musical & dance performances. Oh, did we mention that you’ll be welcomed by a 1.5 tonne dragon?

Kisume

Delight in a celebration of the purity of Japanese cuisine, infused with Australian sensibility. Warm tones of scarlet, chocolate brown with smatterings of soft latte finishes on the walls invite you into the most delectable culinary experience, paired with immaculately presented seasonal and signature dishes. Take the Chef’s Pick or curate your own experience with gyozas, sashimi, main seafood dishes if you’re feeling a tad boujie, spoon some caviar into your plate.
