Breaking The Rules Of Consumption Through Style

There’s a quiet shame woven into the pressure to constantly consume. The expectation to keep up appearances, to never be seen outfit repeating, has become so normalised we rarely question it. The average person buys around 56 new items of clothing each year, yet a significant portion ends up in landfill.

It’s a cycle that no longer makes sense – not for our wardrobes, and not for the planet.

As a collective, we need to start making more conscious decisions about how we consume fashion. As Vivienne Westwood famously said, “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” In this article, I’ll share a few simple ways you can start embodying that mindset through the way you style and wear what you already own.

Getting Creative With Your Wardrobe

The truth is, most of us already have everything we need in our wardrobes. It can feel exhausting trying to create new outfits from pieces you’ve owned for years, especially when the excitement of buying something new is so tempting. But getting creative with what you already have is often where true personal style begins. Try reimagining pieces you typically reserve for casual wear and explore how they can be elevated – even if it means leaning into unexpected pairings. You might surprise yourself, and sometimes the smallest details, like the right accessories, can completely transform an outfit.

Starting with a simple base like jeans and a white tee can create endless outfit possibilities. Small changes like switching up your makeup, styling your hair differently, adding accessories, or swapping your shoes can completely transform a look. When building an outfit, I like to start with a simple base and then add one or two standout pieces, like colourful shoes or a statement jacket, while keeping the rest minimal so the look doesn’t feel overdone.

Transforming Silhouettes

Transforming silhouettes is an easy way to refresh an outfit – one of my favourite tricks is cinching pieces with a belt to create instant shape. Layering is another simple way to change proportions; try a fitted top under an oversized blazer, a jacket over a floaty dress, or a button-up shirt open over a tee. Small styling tweaks like tucking, knotting, rolling sleeves, or cuffing jeans can also completely alter a garment, giving your look a fresh, polished vibe and making even familiar pieces feel new.

Creating Your Signature Look

Having a personal uniform is such a simple way to always feel chic and put together. Using pieces you already love in your wardrobe means you’ll always feel confident and like yourself, no matter the day.

So many celebs do this too, Hailey Bieber is always rocking her go-to jeans, white tee, and oversized blazer. She knows it works, and it’s become her signature look. Victoria Beckham is also known for having a personal uniform, she’s always in tailored trousers and a crisp white shirt. It’s simple, timeless, and totally chic, proving that a few key pieces can make you feel polished and put together every single day.

At the end of the day, style isn’t about having a closet full of new clothes, it’s about loving what you already own and making it feel fresh again. Playing with how you wear pieces, trying new combinations, or finding your go-to uniform can make getting dressed fun instead of stressful. It’s about feeling confident, creative, and like yourself because that’s what really makes an outfit shine.
