Puffing Billy Railway

Experience a journey through time with a ride on Puffing Billy, a steam train that has been in service for over a century. The train travels through the breathtaking landscapes of the Dandenong Ranges, providing a unique opportunity to breathe in the fresh mountain air and admire the beautiful forests and trestle bridges. The open carriages allow for an unobstructed view of the surroundings, making the ride even more unique. There are many experiences to choose from including Paint And Sip, Murder On The Puffing Billy Express, Train of Lights where you get to ride the train at night and they have even dog-friendly carriages. Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden

This stunning garden situated in Olinda showcases an impressive collection of cool-climate plants. You can find magnificent rhododendrons, towering mountain ash trees and serene fern gullies here. The garden offers a peaceful and tranquil environment for leisurely walks, picnics, and birdwatching, with its diverse range of native and exotic flora. The garden transforms with the seasons, providing a unique experience every visit. You can enjoy the vibrant spring blossoms or the colourful tapestry of autumn foliage.

Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden

The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens are located in Sherbrooke, within the Dandenong Ranges. They are the original gardens of the Burnham Beeches estate, which was built for Alfred Nicholas in the 1930s. The gardens are famous for their picturesque ornamental lake, meandering paths, and stunning plantings. You can take a leisurely stroll along the gently winding trails, cross charming stone bridges, and admire the colourful rhododendrons and azaleas that burst into bloom during spring. The garden’s tranquil atmosphere, along with its vibrant bursts of flora, makes it a perfect place for a relaxing walk, a family picnic, or simply an escape from the hustle and bustle of the world.

SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

SkyHigh, located at the peak of Mount Dandenong, provides a breathtaking experience with its beautiful gardens, a challenging hedge maze, and an award-winning bistro. The villages like Olinda, Sassafras, and Mt. Dandenong host a variety of eateries, from cosy cafes and bakeries to fine dining restaurants. First on the list, Olinda Tea House is an Asian fusion restaurant that offers lunch and dinner but is more famously known for its high tea overlooking the oriental gardens and friendly alpacas. It wouldn’t be a trip to the Dandenong Ranges without having Devonshire Tea and Kallista Team Rooms and Miss Marple’s Tea Room serves highly rated scones amongst other savoury dishes. Last but certainly not least, The Independent in Gembrook is an Argentinian restaurant that dishes up a range of delicious meals influenced by owner Mario’s childhood.

The Dandenong Ranges offer a selection of accommodations from boutique cottages to secluded cabins and luxury resorts. Larnook at Sherbrooke is an off-the-grid repurposed shipping container that offers panoramic views. Looking for something a bit bouchéer? Try Magnolias on Mernda, a two-bedroom home with a wood fire and outdoor bath in stunning garden surroundings. Prefer to wake up to the view of towering trees? Stay at the Cottage in the Forest, which is where we stayed and loved. They even have a tall bookcase of novels and DVDs for you to get cosy with in front of the fire.
