ShanDong MaMa

Don't be fooled by its exterior because you might miss out on the best dumplings in Melbourne … yes, we said it! Shan Dong Ma Ma opened in 2011 and is hidden away where you would least expect it. But don't worry, we are going to tell you exactly where to find this hidden gem.

Tucked away in one of Chinatown’s alleyways on Little Burke Street you will come across ShanDong Ma Ma, be sure to look out for the MidCity Complex parking sign and walk down the alley to the left of it. Soon you will come across a big red sign above ShangDong Ma Ma’s restaurant. Owners Meiyan Wang aka Mama and her daughter Ying Hou serve traditional dishes from their hometown of the Shandong Province in Northern China.

Mama herself hand makes all the dumplings and ShangDong MaMa is best known for their Mackerel dumplings- a traditional dish from their province. These dumplings were so fresh and unexpectedly delicious. The more we ate them the more we fell in love with them! There are also many vegetarians and vegan options including bean shoots and tofu skin which was our personal favourite. If you are looking for a meal that won’t break the bank but will leave your stomach and soul feeling warm and satisfied, be sure to check out ShangDong MaMa.
