The Melbourne Fashion Week Trend Predictions: 3 Styles We Predict Will Dominate the Streets

With Melbourne Fashion Week fast approaching, running from the 20th to the 26th of October, talk is abuzz and trend predictions are debated surrounding the top styles that will dominate the Australian runway this year. As Australia’s unofficial fashion capital prepares to host the biggest fashion event of the year, let’s break down the biggest predictions of what people will be wearing, what designers will show, and what cultural/aesthetic vibes will dominate the runway. With “Come As You Are” as the banner under which all event themes fall this year, and a lineup heavy on emerging talent, this fashion week will be blending culture and high fashion with Melbourne’s distinct local fashion scene to create yet another exciting year for fashion lovers.

Tailoring Meets Edge

While tailored clothing and classic silhouettes remain staples on any runway, this fashion week is expected to see these timeless pieces reimagined with unexpected and innovative creative flair. The dining runway shows, Quiet Between Courses and High Tea On The Runway, will spotlight the elegance of classic shapes while infusing them with bold prints, bright colours, and intricate patterns, creating a surreal fusion of tradition and innovation. Blending Melbourne’s local fashion scene with global influences is expected to result in garments that tell a story: upcycled materials, artisan techniques, handcrafted and locally made pieces that showcase intricacy at every level. The message won’t just sit in branding but in the clothes themselves: uneven hems, imperfect finishes, and natural fibres. Many designers are also expected to spotlight responsibility in production and transparency in the process.

Layering with neutrals and earthy tones

This season, neutrals and earthy tones are predicted to dominate the runway with layered colours and patterns to create looks that feel both timeless and effortlessly modern. Shades like mocha mousse, butter yellow and paprika red are key, bringing a sophisticated, grounded feel to the collections. Sheer fabrics will continue to show up, but now used in more creative ways, such as sheer panels, sleeves and skirts, and mesh overlays as opposed to full head-to-toe mesh looks, as transparency continues as a dominant fabric trend. Visibility without over-exposing defines this new direction – more mysterious and ethereal than overtly sexy. Beyond neutrals, designers are embracing pastels, sorbets, sage greens and deeper tones like tomato red and wine, often pairing bold shades with grounded hues. Colour blocking is reimagined with sensitivity to local light and the urban backdrop. While prints will still appear, texture is set to take centre stage: suede, leather, knits, mesh, sheers, fringe and embroidery all play into a tactile sensibility that makes each piece stand out, both in street style and on the runway.

Modern Power Dressing

This season’s power dressing takes a relaxed yet assertive turn, remixing slouchy wear with utilitarian edge. Think silk shirts tucked into A-line leather skirts. Longer hemlines signal the fall of the micro trend, giving way to a sense of maximalism through larger prints and fuller silhouettes. Oversized blazers, wide-leg trousers, and suits with unusual cuts dominate, but they’re far from traditional businesswear. Instead, they carry personality: asymmetrical hems, statement buttons, mixed fabrics, and patterned linings and bold suits often styled with sporty or casual pieces. Suit up, but make it you. Billowy, longline silhouettes in floor-length dresses and asymmetrical skirts continue this fluid reimagining of structure. Relaxed suiting and ties, particularly embraced by women, blur the line between formal and playful. Alongside this, a resurgence of vintage-inspired elegance from the 1950s and ’60s, seen in tweed co-ords and A-line dresses, blends classic refinement with the confidence of contemporary tailoring. It will truly be a fashion show to remember.
