Your Guide to Dressing like the Main Character

I’ve learned that what you wear can say so much more than just “I got dressed today.” For me, it’s become a way of expressing who I am on the inside – bold, unique, and unapologetically me. I don’t really care about following trends or fitting in; I wear what feels right to me. Whether that’s something colourful, a bit weird, or totally vintage, my style is my own little form of storytelling.

Dressing in a way that actually matches who you are on the inside can have such a huge impact on how you feel. When you wear something that feels true to you, it builds confidence. It makes you feel more in control and less anxious about what other people think. I’ve really come to believe in the idea that what you wear can shift the way you think and feel about yourself. The more you lean into your own style, the more confident and grounded you feel.

Now, getting to that point? It doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, years, even. You’ve got to figure out who you really are, what makes you feel good, and yes, you’ll probably make a few fashion mistakes along the way (I know I have). I’ve been working on this for a few years now, and it’s honestly transformed not just how I dress, but how I see myself, and even how I view other people. When I see someone out and about in a wild or quirky outfit, even if it’s not my taste, I have a new sense of respect for them for putting themselves out there. That takes guts.

So how do you even start? With small steps. Grab that one thing you usually wouldn’t dare to wear, maybe it’s a bright pair of shoes, some oversized earrings, or a funky pair of sunglasses. Push yourself to wear something just a bit louder than usual, and then slowly keep stepping it up. You’ll probably find that people start noticing you more, maybe even throwing you a compliment or two. Sure, not every outfit will be a win (I’ve definitely had some questionable fashion moments), but don’t let that stop you. The confidence and self-worth that come from showing up as your true self? Totally worth it.

Lots of love, India xx

Meet India, The Modern Muse Magazine's fashion stylist. India was once an introverted individual who preferred to avoid attention, but her journey of self-discovery led her to embrace fashion as a crucial part of her identity. As she gained confidence, she began experimenting with colour and developed a playful approach to fashion, learning to express her personal style without concern for others' opinions. Her passion for fashion design emerged in childhood and led her to study a personal styling course with the Australian Style Institute in Melbourne. Since then, India has assisted in numerous fashion shows and editorial shoots across the country, with several features in magazines. A strong advocate for sustainable fashion, she encourages conscious consumption and incorporates unique second-hand pieces into her work. Inspired by icons like Carrie Bradshaw, Maxine Wylde, and Wisdom Kaye, India embraces creativity and individuality, viewing fashion as a powerful form of self-expression rather than just following trends.
