What comes to mind when you’re feeling a little rebellious? It could mean a plethora of different things for each individual, but we’ve dissected a few activities that will break the rules that our society has created for us. Fear not, breaking (boring) rules can often be liberating and offer novel perspectives on everyday life. So go ahead – dare to be a little different!

Wine and Dine Yourself on a Solo Dinner Date
Channel your inner Julia Roberts from Eat. Pray. Love. and order that bowl of creamy fettuccine from your favourite Italian restaurant – don’t forget the generous shavings of parmesan on that, too. We’re often subjected into believing ‘going out’ is strictly a group activity that leads to subsequent Instagram carousels of our outfit from every possible angle. However, there’s nothing like spending time with yourself and treating yourself. Why it works? You can follow your own routine at your leisure – without an explanation to anyone.

Break a Fashion Rule Day
Shake things up sartorially – wear pattern on pattern or don’t follow the ‘sandwich’ method (who dictated that shoes absolutely have to match your top?). If you’ve got a pair of gorgeous silk pyjamas that you’d rather be wearing at the bar with heels vs. on your bed with an oodie, slap on some makeup and make a night of it. It can always be a little daunting to step out of fashion’s so-called rulebook, but doing so is akin to a breath of fresh air. This harnesses your own creativity too – perhaps you’ll put together outfits you wouldn’t have curated otherwise.

Digital Detox Sundays
Reach for a book or a cup of tea first thing in the morning, not your phone. Alternatively, break away from the dependency on social media by muting notifications or simply switching off the Wi-Fi for the day. It’s important to stay in touch with the world but try doing it outside of your phone for some time. To ease yourself into it, spend some time clearing out your phone’s storage. Pop those 2018 formal photos onto a USB and delete screenshots of conversations captured in the heat of the moment. It’s not only a digital detox, but a subsequent mental and emotional one.

Reach Out to a Long Lost Friend
We all have that one estranged relative or friend who sometimes pops up in conversation, or who we happen upon through a photo. With time and distance, contact naturally subsides. Flick a message to that friend from high school who happens to be in the same city as you – that once-closed chapter of association may reopen and blossom as you’re both navigating new stages in life. It’s always easier to insist on waiting for action from the other side, but let’s be honest, it’s never truly taxing to be the first one to reach out.

Saying No In The Workplace
In a world where you’re constantly pitted against peers, whether in school, university or the workplace, it’s easy to get caught up in grabbing every opportunity that comes your way. However, if something isn’t serving its purpose in your life or your dream job is taking out a lot more from you than expected, it’s okay to say no and walk away. It is also totally fine to make a career change if you find your calling elsewhere. Burnout shouldn’t be celebrated – mental and emotional wellbeing must be prioritised too.
