Sono Studio: Crafting One of a Kind Ceramics

In the heart of Fitzroy North in Naarm (Melbourne), lies a pottery studio that’s throwing the latest trends in ceramic creativity. Under the skilled hands of artist Abbey Mehrten, Sono Studio is more than just a pottery workshop—it’s a celebration of the simple joys of sharing food, finding comfort in the home, and embracing the whimsy of life, all through the art of functional handmade ceramics.

It’s here you’ll be able to find one of a kind ‘salad claws’ in a stunning grapefruit swirl glaze or perhaps a quirky (and currently sold out) “Dino Juicer” is more your thing.

Abbey’s love affair with pottery began in 2019 when she stepped into her first pottery class. What started as a casual hobby soon blossomed into a passion, offering Abbey a meditative escape from the stresses of work and daily life. Inspired by the therapeutic nature of clay, Abbey set up a studio in her own home and began crafting ceramics part-time.

At the heart of Sono Studio lies Abbey’s philosophy of embracing the present moment—captured beautifully in the studio’s name, with “sono” derived from the Italian verb “to be.” For Abbey, pottery is not merely about creating objects; “It’s a moment where time slows, issues fade, and we are granted a moment of pause to simply be”.

But getting your hands on the latest pieces is not all that’s on offer at Sono Studios. Whether you’re a novice, eager to try your hand at the pottery wheel, or a seasoned artist looking to refine your skills, Sono Studio provides private one-on-one classes tailored to your individual needs.

Beyond individual classes, Sono Studio also hosts private workshops, making it the perfect destination for special occasions and group gatherings. From birthday celebrations to corporate team-building events, workshops at Sono Studio offer a unique blend of relaxation and creativity, allowing participants to bond over the shared experience of handcrafting their own ceramic treasures.

Whether you’re seeking to purchase a one-of-a-kind piece for your collection, looking for a creative outlet or ready to have some fun with friends, Sono Studio is the place to be.
